Baking Fail: The Ugly Duckling

For my birthday this year my sister sent me a copy of the book What’s New, Cupcake? I got really excited about the book because it has all kinds of adorable cupcake creations and it doesn’t even pretend to offer healthy options. One of my favorite creations in the book is called The Chocolate Moose which uses a Twinkie mounted on top of a cupcake and is then coated in chocolate ganache with chocolate antlers and a candy face.
Well, after drooling over the beautiful pictures for a week, I decided that I just had to mount a Twinkie on top of a cupcake. Because the whole idea is pure genius! Huck insisted that I make the duck cupcakes on the cover of the book, so I decided to cut up a Twinkie and use that instead of the donut holes that the book suggests using for the head piece.
Baking fail! Yes, sadly, my ducky was not nearly as gorgeous as the ones on the book cover. He’s kind of lumpy and lopsided. Poor little ugly duckling! When it comes to crafting and visual stuff like this, I tend to be a little cocky about my mad skillz. So it’s frustrating for me when I make something and it doesn’t come out perfect on the first try. At least with this one, I was able to console myself by eating his little wonky Twinkie head.
Of course, this only means that there will be A LOT more cupcakes in this house until I feel that I have sufficiently mastered cupcake construction!
