Mini Piñata Tutorial – Cinco de Mayo Mariachi Band!
Last year, I made Mini Piñata Dancing Girls for Cinco de Mayo. This year, I wanted to make some fellas for the girls, so I made up a Mariachi Band! Aren’t they fun? You can fill them up with candies and punch through the bottom to get the treats and candies. Get the full tutorial after the jump!
Mini Piñatas Tutorial
Cut a large oval out of black cardstock to make the sombrero brim. Trace the cardboard tube in the center with a pencil, then cut out just on that line.
Make tiny snips all around the hole and check the size by slipping the brim over the toilet paper tube. Once it fits, remove it.
Use a paint pen to decorate the bottom of the brim. I added simple hatch marks for stitching along the edges. Use a paint pen or the pencil to roll the edge up in the front.
Cover one end of the tube with a circle of black tissue paper and hold it in place with masing tape. Fill the tube with candies and treats, then seal the other end with black tissue paper. (For a more complete step-by-step of this process, see the Dancing Girls tutorial.)
Fold a piece of black tissue paper into a rectangle and wrap it around the tube so that it covers the bottom 2/3 of the tube. Use white glue to glue in place.
Add a strip of white tissue paper around the neck for a collar.
Fold a piece of red tissue paper to make a long strip. Cut three rectangles and then fold them in half – two longer and one shorter piece.
Tape the red pieces just above the white collar to make a neck bow kerchief thingy.
Tape around the head once or twice to make the skin. Glue on a tissue paper mustache. Scrunch up some of the scraps of black tissue paper and wrap a square of tissue around it. Hold together with tape and form a rounded cone. Tape this to the top of the head.
Cut out a rectangle or oval of black tissue paper and place it over the cone. Hold in place while you slip the hat brim over it to hold it in place. Adjust the tissue hanging under the brim to make hair.
Use paint pens to draw on details on the front of the shirt and on the sides of the pants.
You can also make a guitar or other instruments from scraps of cardboard decorated with paint pens.
